Bakersfield, California / DOT SAP guidance
Return-to-duty process in Bakersfield
A step-by-step guide after a DOT drug or alcohol violation.
- Stop covered safety-sensitive duties. A DOT violation requires removal from covered work; coordinate with your employer.
- Connect with a qualified SAP. Confirm the DOT mode and arrange the initial evaluation.
- Complete the prescribed recommendations. Participate in the required education and/or treatment and supply requested documentation.
- Attend the SAP follow-up evaluation. The SAP determines whether you have successfully complied.
- Coordinate employer testing. The employer arranges the required return-to-duty test after the SAP compliance determination.
- Follow the employer’s return and testing requirements. Required results must be met before covered work resumes; employment remains the employer’s decision.
Plan around your Bakersfield work schedule
Before accepting a dispatch, airport shift, or other covered assignment, verify that all required steps are complete with your DER. Ask about appointment format early and allow time for documentation rather than planning on an immediate return.
After returning
The SAP provides the follow-up testing plan to the employer. It requires at least six unannounced tests during the first 12 months of safety-sensitive duty and may extend longer. Employer-administered follow-up testing is separate from routine random testing.
